Well, last week I got back from visiting a close friend in Tennessee for 3 days. It was a great time spent, and I'm sure I'll be doing it again sometime. Not only do I appreciate having another person who loves the things I do nearby, but the fact that he's experienced the same loss that I have makes me that much more thankful.
No one can really know what it's like till they've gone through it. There are many things people will say or do to try to make you feel better, but sometimes they'll say the wrong things or not understand the jumble of emotions that come out. Just being there, and just listening are enough, but there is no substitute for the understanding that comes from someone who's been through the same.
We went to see The Dark Knight, and it was truly great. If you haven't seen it yet, GO, you will not regret it. ^o^ All I have to say is that Heath Ledger's performance was amazing.
Something interesting happened just a week before I went on the trip. My Mom and I found a grey kitten on the side of the road. We were having a bad day when we were going to the drugstore, and Mom saw something run into the ditch on the side of the road. She stopped and put the window down, and out comes this little meowing kitten. It was almost like he wanted to get to me. I got out of the car and picked him up, and he was so affectionate. I put him back down, and then he looked as if he wanted to jump in the car, so we called some friend's of ours to take him to. In the car, he was rubbing his cheeks against mine, and being so lovable.
When our friend got a good look at him, she saw that his little footpads were burnt and blistered from walking on hot asphalt, and he had several scratches on him too. He also had some fur missing.
I got emotional because I remembered that my Dad had known since I was little that I loved grey cats. My Mom started to cry, and told me that his eyes reminded her of my Dad's. So, we decided to keep the little guy. I really feel like he was somehow a gift from my Dad.
We've had him now for a few weeks, and we have named him "Ashton". He has gained weight and his fur is growing back. He's due for his next couple of shots this week. He's currently staying on our front porch where he has a few cardboard boxes to sleep in, and we are going to have him be an indoor/outdoor cat. He'll probably be out most of the day and then in at night. He seems to prefer being outside, and his few excursions into the house have been spent exploring. He also likes to eat a variety of flying bugs that come on the porch at night. I don't doubt that may be one way he survived out in the wild like he did. He just seems so grateful to be with us, like he knows it's a second chance. He'll be my very first cat, since I've never owned one. Our dog already is familiar with him, and she's learning to be gentle, and even though she wants to play with him, he has not real interest yet.

(This is an older pic, he looks much better now. I'll post newer pics shortly.)
He is the most affectionate cat I've ever seen. All he wants is to be petted and picked up when we got outside. He's very vocal too. He's certainly special, that I know.
Besides all that, not much else is new. I'll try to keep the deviations coming as I can.
All for now.
